Practicing Peace in the Body: For Caretakers

In order to heal others, we first need to heal ourselves. And to heal ourselves, we need to know how to deal with ourselves.
— Thich Nhat Hanh

Practicing Peace in The Body: For Caretakers

This workshop is open to any person who cares for bodies. This includes, but is not limited to: mothers, caretakers, dietitians, therapists, yoga teachers, movement professionals, doctors, trainers, nurses, and more.

What we bring into the room affects the people we work with. This is an opportunity to open up an inner and outer dialogue about our relationships with our bodies as caretakers in a safe space - a chance to set aside thinking and try on feeling.

In this special, clinician-led workshop, we will practice making peace with our bodies through mindful movement. We will move through a yoga sequence that taps into the wisdom of the body and leave time for a discussion about our relationships with our bodies as caretakers. By engaging in this practice, we strengthen the offering that we model and teach to our clients, children, and loved ones.

Lauren is a clinical social worker and body positive yoga teacher with a passion for helping people live peacefully in their bodies. Lauren unites her passions for movement, therapeutic healing, and social justice through her yoga practice and teaching. She created InBodied Yoga because she longed for a "safe yoga zone" in Manhattan, absent diet talk, body discrimination, and weight stigma, where the diversity of human beauty and strength could be celebrated. For two years, she taught outdoor classes on a rooftop in SoHo, collaborating with body positive yoga trail blazers, Dana Falsetti & Jessamyn Stanley. She now focuses on her clinical area of expertise, eating and body image problems, teaching yoga workshops in New York City and providing private yoga therapy for individuals working on their relationships with food, exercise, and body. Lauren strives to offer a practice that is free of dogma, accessible to individual needs, trauma-informed, and above all, emotionally and physically safe.

Lauren has graduate-level training in Vinyasa Yoga and clinical social work. She has post-graduate training in Restorative Yoga, Biomechanics, and Feminist Relational Psychotherapy. She is currently working on her Yoga for All certification with Dianne Bondy and Amber Karnes.

Yoga for Better Body Image

A culture fixated on female thinness is not an obsession about female beauty, it is an obsession about female obedience. Dieting is the most potent political sedative in women’s history; a quietly mad population is a tractable one.
— Naomi Wolf
Over half the females between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five would prefer to be run over by a truck than be fat.
— Courtney Martin

Body dissatisfaction is rampant in our culture - and, not just for women. Research suggests that anywhere from 40-70% of the American population experiences negative body image. It also indicates that yoga can help! By supporting practitioners in the development of critical coping skills, yoga facilitates the integration of body and mind, improving mood, self-image, and overall well-being.

Developed and facilitated by therapeutic yoga teacher and eating disorder clinician, Lauren Ezell, RYT, LCSW, this workshop is a unique opportunity to work on your relationship with your body using yoga postures, breathwork, and group discussion.

We will begin with a therapeutic sequence of yoga poses, intended to free and align the joints. We will end our practice with a combination of restorative yoga postures and guided visualization to enter a state of deep relaxation. Once you are feeling relaxed in your body, Lauren will give a brief presentation about weightism and body image based on her extensive training and clinical work with eating and body image problems; followed by group process of the experience, and an opportunity to share.

No yoga experience is required for this workshop. The only prerequisite is a desire to make peace with one's body.
